New City

Hello! Sorry for the radio silence last week. The stress of moving and planning was a little overwhelming! I'm feeling much better now that I'm back in Halifax and settling in. I don't move in until tomorrow, but I've been moving my boyfriend in to his place and it's looking great! I haven't yet figured out where/when/how to take outfit pictures, but I have some backlog in the mean time.

These are photos of a picnic last week with a friend and my boyfriend (my sister was there too, but she isn't in the photos). More soon!

From the Stratford Festival

Last night I saw The Tempest at the Stratford Festival, and let me tell you... it was amazing. Christopher Plummer played Prospero, and even came into the balcony and stood eight feet from where I was sitting at one point! And he did the final monologue, a favourite of mine, very well. Obviously. He is Christopher Plummer.

Here are my sister and I, ready for the show!

Happy Weekend... more photos of my week up next week.

Knotty Skirt

I am really loving this skirt. Reminds me of this look...

Somewhat Ole

Skirt (as a dress): no tag, consignment; Belt: vintage; Necklace: vintage; Ring: Nasty Gal

These are some pics my friend Emma took the other night while we fiesta-ed (unfortunately, I decided not to post the pictures with sombreros in them). This skirt is new, and this ring represents my first adventure in online shopping. It was way too easy. I have a feeling this will be bad for my Visa card...

Style Adventures

If I were more adventurous in my style and self-conscious, I would...

AE Dresses

Normally I don't head to American Eagle when I want feminine and sophisticated dresses (or you know, at all) but look at these! I love them all.

Plaid Skirt

Long have I been a plaid shirt girl, so I am all over the plaid skirt for this fall, a la Louis Vuitton Fall 2010. I love the ballet length. Luckily, I already own one - I found it while raiding the old dress up box in my basement! Thrifty aren't I?

I'm pretty sure it didn't get much wear in dress-up games - the silky slips and scarves were much better for playing princess than wool.

Pictures of it soon!

Tonight the boyfriend arrives! Will my posting become more sporadic? Will my outfits get even awesome in an effort to impress him? Will my time off work mean he has to endure hours of my photo shoots with my sister? Stay tuned to find out!
For now, happy weekend!

Last Work Week

Dress: , shirt dress (worn as a cardigan): H&M, earrings: Ardene's, shoes: consignment, no label

I turned the camera on my equally stylish sister. She is way photogenic, don't you think?

She is a posing queen.
I emulated her style...

Tomorrow the boyfriend comes back to town, bringing 14 months of long distance dating to an end. We'll be touring around Ottawa, seeing a show at Stratford, doing lots of fun things. I've shopped up a storm recently, it seems, so I'll have to take lots of pictures. (Thanks in advance, sister!)

Festival Season

Remember when I wanted new rain boots to go to a concert? Here are pictures of that time, featuring, once more, some of my attractive friends. I look a little silly with my mouth hanging open, but isn't my shirt cute?

Old Hair

Since I'm always hemming and hawing over my hair, I thought I'd share a couple of pictures of my short hair. Both of these pictures were taken three years ago on a school trip to Barcelona.

On Clutter

Last year I became the luckiest dorm-dweller ever: I had a walk-in closet off my dorm room. It was a bit of leftover space next to an elevator shaft, and I happily stocked it full of my clothes, accessories, shoes, and miscellaneous stuff.

This year I'm not so lucky. In fact, my room has a terrible crevice of a closet. And I have lots and lots of clothes. What's a girl to do but dream of fabulous closet spaces?

Emma Watson

Holy hair! She looks incredible!

Is it a sign for me? My hair is growing longer and I think I'm loving it... but then I think of how easy this hair is day-to-day.

Then I remember how I don't have a team of stylists to make me look cool and dress it up, or to put in extensions while it grows out (such an awkward, painful process).

I can dream. *sigh*

Jeans + Scarf

This scarf is my most favourite scarf (and I have loads of them!). It came into my life at a Value Village a few years ago. My bohemienne of a friend convinced me I'd find tons of fantastic things there, which I did not. I bought a few other things, but the only thing I still own is this scarf. It came with a whole outfit, which I didn't buy, but managed to get it on its own. It's been through a lot - almost lost it a few times, worn it more ways than I can count, gotten various things on it which I have lovingly hand-washed out - and it's my favourite.

Do you have favourite scarves? Or favourite other items of clothing?

Licensed to Drive

the drive, originally uploaded by .faramarz.

After some delay and consternation (so, I got lost on my way to my original test and missed it and had to reschedule for a month later... it happens), I went this morning at the crack of 8:20 for my driving test. And I passed! With flying colours, I might add. She only ticked one box on my whole test. You can round that up to 100%, right? Excellent.

I'm looking forward to putting my license to good use when I hit the road with my boyfriend later this month!

Ring Shopping

Fall trend: big rings. I'm stocking up.

Behind the Scenes at Clothes Horse

Behind The Scenes from The Clothes Horse on Vimeo.

A peek at someone else's creative process...

Clothes Horse is another personal style blog. Rebecca has been at it way longer than me and has got it down to a science by now! She takes her photos using a tripod (where I enlist the help of friends and family... not sure what I will do when I return to school in a few weeks!) and with the help of a second tripod, she made this video to document her process. I love her style and she's so adorable!

PS: The song is from one of my favourite artists, Florence and the Machine.

Erin Wasson on Fashion and Feminism

From Refinery 29

What's your response to people who say that loving fashion is anti-feminist?

"Here's the thing about the fashion business: Most of it is run by gay men who will never be able to completely understand a woman...I think there is a lack of a true connection with what a woman really is. Of course, there will always be designers like Donna Karan and Diane von Furstenburg. But people have asked me if I've ever felt objectified in photo shoots and campaigns and I always say: I'm going to do what I feel comfortable with. If is was ever a point where I don't feel comfortable, then I'm not going to do it.

"Sex sells. We're all sexual beings, we all like to have sex, we all like to talk about sex. We all like watching sexual energy and chemistry ignite in front of us. It's exciting, it's human nature. So to use an element of sex in fashion to get people excited and to pay attention is human nature. Americans are so prude. It really bothers me.

"But at the end of the day, nobody really cares about a male model, I mean, lets [sic] be real. Nobody gets excited about the next "It" guy. Here's a business where if you look at a male model and a female model, guess what? We make more money. And that's fucking empowering." --Erin Wasson

What's really empowering here? Erin Wasson is a woman on a mission, getting her creative voice out there, taking control of her career and remaining true to herself. Now that's what I call a role model.
